Board approves 2009 maximum tax levy, Truth in Taxation is Dec. 4

Sept. 9, 2008 - The Hennepin County Board today (Sept. 9) approved a maximum property tax levy for 2009, as required by state law.

The net levy – coming from property taxes in the county – could increase by 7 percent over 2008, or a total of $644 million. The board can adopt a levy that is lower than the approved maximum.

County Administrator Richard Johnson will present the proposed 2009 Hennepin County budget and proposed tax levy to the board on Tuesday, Sept.. 23. Before making a final decision on 2009 taxes and next year’s budget, the board will hold a series of hearings which are open to the public.

In November, property owners in the county will get a notice from Hennepin that shows the impact of the maximum levy on their property; the notice includes the impact of taxes proposed by other local units of government, such as cities and school districts.

The board scheduled Hennepin’s Truth in Taxation public hearing for Thursday, Dec. 4, at 5:30 p.m. in the Board Room on the 24th Floor of the Hennepin County Government Center, 300 S. Sixth St., Minneapolis.

The board, acting as the Hennepin County Regional Railroad Authority (HCRRA), also approved the maximum levy for the railroad authority at $7 million, which is a reduction of more than $8.5 million from the 2008 levy. The proposed HCRRA levy and budget will be discussed at the Public Works budget hearing at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 13, and at the Truth-in-Taxation hearing Dec 4.

The board, acting as the Hennepin County Housing and Redevelopment Authority (HCHRA), also approved a maximum HCHRA levy at $1.3 million. The proposed HCHRA budget will be discussed Tuesday, Oct. 14, immediately following the County Board meeting, which starts at 1:30 p.m., and also at the Truth-in-Taxation hearing Dec. 4.

The final Hennepin County, HCRRA and HCHRA budgets and tax levies will be adopted at the board’s Tuesday, Dec. 16, meeting.

The board also set public hearings for Friday, Oct. 31, on proposed changes to fees charged for county services and on the county’s 2009 capital improvements budget.
