ST. PAUL – A new poll conducted by Minnesota Majority shows that Rep. Margaret Anderson-Kelliher (DFL, Minneapolis) doesn’t necessarily represent the views of her constituents. The poll solicited feedback from voters residing in House District 60A on ten votes from the 2007-2008 legislative sessions. The votes spanned a range of issues, including taxation, parental rights, illegal immigration and morality.
Minnesota Majority says the poll was prompted by its recently released legislative scorecard. The scorecard rated all 134 members of the Minnesota House of Representatives on 43 different votes cast during the 2007-2008 sessions. “We were surprised that 10 legislators scored a perfect 0% on our scorecard,” said Jeff Davis, President of Minnesota Majority. “Past polls have shown that Minnesota Majority’s positions on the issues represent the views of most Minnesotans. It seemed odd to us that these legislators would not agree with us on at least some the 43 votes we tracked. It appears many legislators are taking positions far to the Left of where their constituents are at on the issues, but we didn’t have hard data to confirm it.”
Minnesota Majority decided to poll Kelliher’s district to test its theory. “If voters agree with us in what is arguably the most liberal district in Minnesota, then it’s safe to assume many other legislators are just as out-of-step with their constituents,” said Davis. “This is a very serious problem – people in these districts are clearly not getting good representation.” House District 60A encompasses neighborhoods such as Loring Park, the north end of Uptown, Lake of the Isles and a portion of Downtown Minneapolis. The poll shows that District 60A voters disagree with Kelliher’s position on 90% of the votes.
A total of 48 legislators scored 10% or less on Minnesota Majority’s legislative scorecard. “This poll suggests that these legislators are just pushing a radical political agenda rather than doing their job and representing their constituents’ interests,” said Davis. Minnesota Majority believes this should be a wakeup call to voters across the state. “People need to evaluate their legislator’s voting record and hold them accountable in this year’s election,” said Davis.
